Foreign Troops Except Russia Should Leave Syria, U.S. Envoy Says,

The U.S. wants foreign troops to withdraw from Syria, though it doesn’t expect Russian forces to leave, the American special envoy to the Middle East nation said.

The Russian military presence, which includes a naval port and an air base, predates the civil war in Syria that broke out in 2011, and Washington doesn’t include it in demands for foreign troops to exit the country, the envoy, James Jeffrey, told reporters on a conference call Tuesday. “All the other forces would be ready to leave if the Iranians left and if there was a political solution,” he said.
