Dispersed basing has been used by the Swedish Air Force since the 1960s—a lesson learned in part from the 1967 Six-Day War when Israel destroyed the Egyptian Air Force on the ground. The concept has been constantly adapted and every fighter type developed by Sweden has been designed to be maintained in austere conditions and operate from short airstrips and road runways.
