From joint coast guard interoperability exercises in the North Atlantic to advanced unmanned maritime testing in northern Norway and new alliance-wide initiatives spanning the Arctic, the past several weeks have highlighted an increasingly coordinated Western approach to security in Europe’s northern waters.
The latest U.S.-Norwegian Coast Guard cooperation concluded in mid-July as crews aboard the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Stone and the Norwegian Coast Guard vessel Hopen completed Operation Arctic Cohesion 2026, a week-long interoperability exercise conducted off New England and in Newport, Rhode Island.
The July 8-15 exercise focused on crew exchanges, joint seamanship training and discussions on Arctic coast guard operations, while observers from Canada and Finland attended to capture lessons for the wider Arctic Coast Guard Forum. […]
Earlier this year, NATO launched Arctic Sentry, a new enhanced vigilance activity intended to coordinate Allied operations across the High North under a single operational framework. The alliance has also established Forward Land Forces Finland and launched Task Force X-Arctic, an initiative that uses networked autonomous systems to improve situational awareness across the North Atlantic and Arctic.
