Denmark and the Faroe Islands have agreed to strengthen their military cooperation by expanding defense activity in and around the North Atlantic archipelago, including F-35 fighter patrols, frigate deployments and support for NATO maritime operations, as Copenhagen continues to reinforce its Arctic security posture amid renewed U.S. interest in Greenland.
The agreement, announced this week, calls for a gradual increase in Danish military activity around the self-governing islands in coordination with Faroese authorities as part of the Kingdom of Denmark’s broader effort to enhance security across the Arctic.
“I am pleased with the strong and trusting cooperation we have between the countries in the Kingdom. With the agreement between Denmark and the Faroe Islands to jointly strengthen activity in and around the Faroe Islands, we are sending a clear signal that the Kingdom takes the responsibility for our collective security seriously throughout the Kingdom,” Danish Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus said.
