Statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs Wallström regarding the Security Council’s extraordinary meeting on Jerusalem, government.se

The UN Security Council convened today for an extraordinary meeting on Jerusalem at the request of Sweden, Bolivia, Egypt, France, Italy, Senegal, the UK and Uruguay. The fact that a majority of Council members requested the meeting, including all EU Member States on the Security Council, shows the seriousness with which the international community views the status of Jerusalem and the statement by the United States.

The US statement of 6 December recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is not in line with international law and UN Security Council resolutions, and risks leading to strong reactions and greater instability in an already turbulent region. All final status issues, including Jerusalem’s status as a future capital of both states, must be resolved through negotiations between the parties and not through unilateral action by the parties or others.
