ÖB räknar med långt krig, folkbladet.nu

– Det är all time low.

’Turkey won’t let Sweden, Finland into NATO if promises not kept’, dailysabah.com

Sweden and Finland cannot enter the NATO alliance if the Turkish Parliament does not ratify their membership applications, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said Monday.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Turkish broadcaster NTV, Çavuşoğlu said that Sweden and Finland have to comply with the memorandum, warning that ”if they do not comply, we will not accept them into NATO.”

Turkey will ensure that other NATO countries participate in the memorandum signed with Sweden and Finland, the minister said and added: ”It will not be limited to just three countries. This is a written commitment. We wanted them to be written and signed.” Läs artikel

Biden’s War For Liberalism, theamericanconservative.com/

Peter Van Buren, author of We Meant Well: How I Helped Lose the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People,

What if Joe Biden threw a party and no one came? Such is the case in Ukraine, where slogging Russian progress is matched by Biden’s belief that global hegemony is at stake and that he is fighting his war at little cost. Here is the war at about four months in, as Biden announces a new aid package of $1.2 billion atop some $40 billion in previous “lend-lease” aid.

Given that core NATO members raise a quiet glass every night to the fact they are not militarily involved in the fight for the Donbas and Crimea (the latter invoking 19th-century memories of the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade, as the area was last seriously contested between East and West when the British fought the Russians there) Joe Biden and the Washington establishment stand alone in thinking Biden leads the West in some sort of epic struggle. This war is being fought with arms supplies and sanctions, both of which are failing, leaving Biden exposed, to awake one day soon to find himself the Emperor of Donbas without any clothes. […]

The biggest problem with trying to win simply via outspending the other guy is artillery and anti-tank missiles do not hold ground, infantry does. A brave Ukrainian taking on a T-72 may stop the tank (until another comes along) but he cannot retake a village or hold ground against a combined-arms offensive. In short, the flow of U.S. defensive-style weapons has done its job and exactly what it was intended to do: blunt an offensive. The problem is, there seems to be little plan for what comes next. In areas like Donbas where Russia enjoys local support, or areas like around Mariupol where it is willing to employ a scorched-earth policy, the Ukrainians are predictably losing and will continue to do so. Pope calls for de-escalation over war in Ukraine, vaticannews.va

“Let us continue to pray for peace in Ukraine and throughout the world.”

Pope Francis offered that invitation at the Angelus prayer on Sunday, adding that the “world needs peace.”

He said peace cannot be based “on the balance of arms or mutual fear”, saying such a strategy would “turn the clock back by seventy years.”

“I appeal to the Heads of Nations and International Organizations to react to the tendency to accentuate conflict and confrontation.”

The Pope said the war in Ukraine “should have—and still could—become a challenge for wise statesmen capable of building a better world for future generations through dialogue.”

“With God’s help, this is always possible!”

However, added Pope Francis, nations need to turn from a paradigm in which the world is divided among conflicting powers and toward a world united in mutual respect.

“We need to move away from strategies based on political, economic, and military power and toward a project for global peace.”

2015 Nuclear Deal at Critical Juncture, Briefers Tell Security Council, Urging United States, Iran to Not Lose Momentum from Recent Talks, un.org

Negotiations to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between the United States and Iran are at a critical juncture, briefers told the Security Council today, stressing that the momentum of recent days on that landmark achievement in nuclear non-proliferation must not be lost.

Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, noted diplomatic engagements in and around the Joint Commission to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action resumed in November 2021.  Achieving the Plan of Action took determined diplomacy, and restoring it will require additional effort and patience, she said, urging Iran and the United States to quickly mobilize in that spirit and commitment.  She appealed to the United States to lift or waive its sanctions as outlined in the Plan and called on Iran to reverse the steps it has taken that are not consistent with its nuclear‑related commitments. […]

Björn Olof Skoog, Permanent Observer for the European Union, in its capacity as observer, speaking on behalf of Josep Borrell, Coordinator of the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, said that, since the last report on the implementation of resolution 2231 (2015) in December 2021, all Plan of Action participants and the United States continued their intense negotiations in Vienna to restore the Plan.  Those negotiations have been challenging in terms of overcoming the trust deficit following previous actions by both parties.  However, a promising and detailed text was produced by March.

Nonetheless, he voiced grave concern over Iran’s continued accumulation of enriched uranium and the installation of advanced centrifuges and its removal of IAEA cameras from key nuclear facilities, which have substantially decreased the Agency’s access to relevant information on the nuclear programme.  Voicing regret about the re-imposition of previously lifted United States unilateral sanctions, he said restoration of the Plan of Action is the only way for Iran to reap the full benefits of the Plan and reach its full economic potential.  Calling for the necessary political will restore the Plan of Action on the basis of the text that is on the table, he urged all Member States to refrain from actions and statements that increase regional and international tensions.

Remarks by Ambassador Zhang Jun at the UN Security Council Briefing on Ukraine, un.china-mission.gov

[…] Like all peace-loving countries and people around the world, China pays close attention to NATO strategic adjustment, and is deeply concerned about the policy implications of the so-called “Strategic Concept”. Certain NOTO leaders lately painted other countries as a threat. But the fact is it’s NATO itself that has made troubles in different parts of the world. We urge NATO to learn its lessons, and not to use Ukraine crisis as excuse to stoke worldwide bloc confrontation or a new Cold War, and not to look for imaginary enemies in the Asia Pacific or artificially create contradictions and divisions.

We firmly oppose certain elements clamoring for NATO’s involvement in the Asia Pacific, or an Asia Pacific version of NATO on the back of military alliances. The long-outdated Cold War script must never be reenacted in the Asia Pacific. The kind of turmoil and conflict that are affecting parts of the world must not be allowed to happen in the Asia Pacific. Asia Pacific countries share the appreciation for the hard-won peace and prosperity, and the wish to focus on mutually beneficial cooperation in pursuit of common development and revitalization. Any attempt to go against the tide of history is doomed to fail. Läs talet

Biden asks Congress to approve NATO bids from Finland, Sweden, nypost.com

Finland and Sweden took one step closer to full membership in NATO as President Biden formally asked Congress to approve the alliance’s expansion in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The White House on Saturday released two letters that Biden sent to key congressional committees, along with two separate reports on the Scandinavian nations’ fitness to join the defensive group after seven decades of neutrality.

The president’s missives formally launched the “advise and consent” process that NATO requires each member to undertake before new members can be added. Läs artikel

EU nears compromise deal to defuse standoff with Russia over Kaliningrad, reuters.com

Trade through Lithuania to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad could return to normal within days, two sources familiar with the matter said, as European officials edge towards a compromise deal with the Baltic state to defuse a row with Moscow.

Kaliningrad, which is bordered by European Union states and relies on railways and roads through Lithuania for most goods, has been cut off from some freight transport from mainland Russia since June 17 under sanctions imposed by Brussels.

European officials are in talks about exempting the territory from sanctions, which have hit industrial goods such as steel so far, paving the way for a deal in early July if EU member Lithuania drops its reservations, said the people, who declined to be named because the discussions are private.

The row over the Russian exclave’s isolation is testing Europe’s resolve to enforce sanctions imposed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, fuelling fears of an escalation after other restrictions pushed Russia to default on its debt. Läs artikel
